Korea Post Makes First Drone Delivery

The Korea Post recently used a drone to deliver a package to a remote southern island, marking South Korea’s first successful aerial delivery.

The postal agency said it used the unmanned aerial vehicle to deliver the eight-kilogram package from its post office in Goheung county to Deungnyang Island. The parcel successfully made it through the four-kilometer trip.

The delivery to the remote rural area is expected to allow Korea Post to check the performance of the delivery system.

The delivery follows Korea Post’s earlier tests carried out to remote islands off the coast of Jeolla Province and in mountainous regions in Gangwon Province.

The government and local companies have ramped up efforts to utilize and commercialize drones in various applications, including logistics and search missions, to grab a chunk of the promising industry.
